US to release $1.6 billion in aid to Pakistan


The United States is going to release over one-point-six billion dollars in military and economic aid to Pakistan. The aid was suspended when relations between the two countries were strained over a range of issues. That included a covert US raid that allegedly killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden as well as deadly American airstrikes against Pakistani soldiers in 2011. Now, US officials say ties have improved enough to allow the aid to flow again. Pakistan's new Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, is traveling to Washington for talks with President Barack Obama this coming week.
